This charming Navajo sand painting is used during sacred ceremony called the 'Shooting Way Chant.'
This ancient ritual takes place over four days and five nights. The painting depicts four 'Rainbow Girls' with eagle feather headdresses and intricate ceremonial dress. The four are positioned around a central medallion with rich shades of white, grey, yellow ochre and burnt sienna, which represents the four winds. The rich tones of the painting are created by crushing different colored sandstones and applying the sand using adhesive. This unique piece was created by Robert and Tina Steven, full blooded Navajos from the Corn Fields, Arizona area. They incorporate the teachings of Robert's grandfather, a Navajo medicine man, when designing these beautiful works. A story on the reverse side explains the symbolism used in the painting.
