Add a touch of Native American culture to your home or workplace with this hand-carved Lakota Mother Earth Turtle.
Recently, Worldstock made a special trip to the Pine Ridge reservation area in South Dakota. While there we met David Little Whiteman, Lakota Oglala Sioux, who makes hand-carved Mother Earth Turtles that are constructed from a piece of soap stone. In the old days, the Lakota people thought turtles were water carriers, because where the turtle went, the water would follow. When a turtle was seen leaving a pond, the Lakota knew that dry times were coming. Living both in water and on earth, the turtle represents the Mother Earth. The symbol carved on the turtle is that of a medicine wheel representing the circle of life.
