The unique rectangular beads are actually ancient Roman Glass shards which are made from the rims of bowls and plates dating back to the Roman Empire. The ancient glassblowers folded over the edges of the hot glass to finish their work, creating a skinny hollow area that is perfect for stringing.
In a workshop on a kibbutz in Israel, jewelers soak the shards in water, removing layers of sediment and patina which have built up over the centuries, restoring the glass to its original blue green color. They then cut and file the pieces and string them as beads and accent them with amethyst stone chips and a silver bead evocative of ancient artifacts. The effect is contemporary even though the glass is old.
