As a decoration or functional serving vessel, this eye-catching bowl will captivate your guests. This is one of a series of handmade pottery pieces from the Pomaire region of Chile.
Marisol Quiroz makes these pieces in a workshop behind her home in Pomaire, a village west of Santiago, Chile known as an historic meeting place for Chileans en route to the shore. Marisol works with her husband and four other women, shaping each bowl by hand before adding its face and legs.
Pomaire pottery dates back centuries and is traditionally 'women's work'; the women of Pomaire have now organized a producers' association for mutual assistance. Association members follow exercise routines to offset arthritis (which has plagued potters), and have improved their kilns to minimize the smoke that can cause lung damage.
